Country/Province/City selection has always been an issue when working with a website. Do you use a drop-down allowing a user to only select items that are in your database? Do you just make the field a text box so a user can type in anything they want? Or is there a better way to do this?
We have ran MovesOnline.com with "cascading combo box's" since the start of the project, but it was always a problem because of the amount of post backs when selections were changed.
We attempted to use "Ajax" controls to auto complete, but the page just didn't work correctly all the time. Finally a solution came to me in the name of "jQuery autocomplete".
Switching to use jQuery autocomplete has worked wonders on the page making country, city selection simpler, and less annoying for the end user with no post backs.
The auto complete allows a user to select from a list of items in the database and narrows down the search as the user types. If a city or country is not listed in the database the user still have the ability to go ahead and add the city. Over time I will incorporate a way of adding these manually entered cities into the database making this selection available in the future for other users.
